Overview

To the casual visitor, Rome's greatest monuments - including the Colosseum, the Forum and the Pantheon - proclaim the glories of the ancient past, whilst tourist hotspots - such as the Trevi Fountain, the Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps - speak of the Baroque.

As a result, Rome is not strongly associated with the Renaissance. Yet within the walls of many churches and palaces throughout the city, one can see and experience a supreme expression of art from this famous period.

In the period immediately prior to the Renaissance and with the papacy resident in Avignon, Rome was in a state of decay. It was the return of the papal court to Rome in 1377 that signalled the city’s revival, and a succession of Popes took it upon themselves to restore Rome to a position of power and preeminence.

In this visually magnificent lecture, join Paul Brown to discover how the ‘Renaissance’ Popes instigated great civic projects and, through their patronage, brought the most talented artists from all parts of Italy to restore Rome spiritually, intellectually and artistically, to ensure it would once again became the caput mundi - or capital of the world.
