Overview

The 6000-year-old artworks associated with the Chalcolithic period in the Southern Levant are striking and important to our understanding of preliterate societies, yet few people know about them.

In the 1000 years that the Ghassulian Chalcolithic culture flourished (named for the type-site of Teleilat Ghassul in Jordan), there were many innovations, including the introduction of complex metallurgy, intricately crafted, wheel-turned ceramics, as well as polychrome frescoes - all of which were laden with cultic symbology. Yet all of that knowledge abruptly disappeared.

Join Dr Bernadette Drabsch to find out why with this compelling lecture about one of the most intriguing periods of prehistory.
