Overview

Sandro Botticelli was born, lived and died in the same neighbourhood of quattrocento Florence, leaving the city only twice during his lifetime for short periods of time (one of which was to fresco the walls of the Sistine Chapel in Rome at the behest of his patron Lorenzo di Medici).

His long career was therefore interconnected with the city during an extraordinary period of cultural and economic prosperity. After serving his apprenticeship under one of the leading Florentine painters of the day, Fra Filippo Lippi (whom Botticelli credited with influencing the way in which he painted his female subjects), he subsequently flourished under the patronage of the ruling Medici family and became a star of Florence’s art world.

In his later years, Botticelli descended into poverty and obscurity, and after his death, his art was overlooked until it was rediscovered by the Pre-Raphaelites in the nineteenth century.

Yet, today Botticelli’s name is synonymous with the Renaissance and its birthplace - Florence. Join new lecturer Paul Brown to find out why with this moving look at his paintings of transcendent grace and beauty.
