Overview
Buddhism was born in India and was once the state religion of the large and powerful Mauryan Empire of King Ashoka.
Yet after the King's death, Buddhism was driven out of India – north to Tibet, China and Japan, and also south-east to Sri Lanka and South-East Asia.
Join Judy Tenzing for a fascinating lecture which explores the roots of this great faith system, and its subsequent growth in India from the time of its founder, Siddhartha Gautama.
Your Expert lecturer
After graduating in Indian History, Judy Tenzing returned to India to travel, study and ultimately work as a tour guide. Living in the great subcontinent for over a decade and continuing to travel there for over 35 years has afforded Judy both a theoretical and hands-on knowledge of the history and cultures of this extraordinary country. The Mughal Empire has always been one of her passions, along with the British Raj which succeeded it, and her understanding of these periods has led to a clear grasp of Indian in the modern era. Judy takes pride in keeping up her scholarship in this field as new perspectives emerge on eras and figures of the past - such as the new views on Aurangzeb.
