Overview

One of the most splendid and well known buildings in all of Venice, the Doge's Palace was the seat of government in the time of the Venetian Doges and the Republic of Venice.

Its architecture epitomises the Venetian gothic, bringing together northern European and central Asian influences, reflecting Venice's international connections. It was here that the councils of the Venetian government met in sumptuous chambers decorated by the greatest artists of the day - including Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. These elaborate decorative schemes not only reflected the values of the State, but also contributed to the Myth of Venice and the self-fashioning of Venetian identity.

Join Venetian resident and expert Dr Susan Steer for a refreshing look at one the floating city's greatest icons.
