Overview

In 1897, Irish author Bram Stoker debuted his new dark Gothic novel, Dracula, to a Victorian London which was still in the terrifying grip of the infamous Jack the Ripper murders.

But this was no ordinary horror story. Stoker’s anti-hero, Count Dracula, was charming, menacing, and otherworldly, yet with a complexity of character which ignited an entire genre of literature and film, an enduring popularity which continues today.

Stoker shaped the rich, atmospheric world of Dracula, infusing his story with popular Central European folktales and lore, and dramatic historical accounts of the legendary 15th-century Romanian prince Vlad Dracul “Son of the Dragon”.

In this lecture, Dr Lauren Mackay threads together the complex layers of history, myth, and real-life inspiration that led to the creation of Dracula, a story which continues to enthral with its terrifying narrative, earning its place in the annals of horror.
