Overview

By the tender age of fifteen, the extraordinarily talented artist Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun was already earning enough money from her portrait painting to support not only herself, but her whole family.

Born in Paris in 1755, at a time when very few women became respected professional artists, Le Brun was appointed the official artist of Marie Antoinette in 1788, and thereafter the French Queen was not only a patron, but also a close confidante.

Forced to flee Paris following the outbreak of the French revolution, Le Brun thrived in exile, where she was handsomely paid to produce portraits of the most celebrated residents of Rome, Vienna, Moscow and Berlin.

Join art historian Dr Sophie Oosterwijk for a look at the dramatic life of one of Europe's most celebrated society portrait painters, as well as her luminous Neoclassical artworks.
