Overview

Once regarded as the "also ran" Impressionist - whose personal art collection was considered more important than his own artwork - in recent times the French painter Gustave Caillebotte has been the subject of intense critical interest, and his work now rivals that of his friends Monet and Renoir in popularity.

What makes Caillebotte so special is the truthfulness of his vision, along with his unique and original subject matter. In his bid to capture Paris during a key moment of transition - as it rapidly industrialised and modernised during the second half of the 19th century -  Caillebotte refreshingly painted subjects that were previously considered unworthy of artistic attention.

Join Patrick Bade for an eye opening lecture which celebrates Gustave Caillebotte's burgeoning reputation 130 years after his premature death.
