Overview
Lake Mungo - located within the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area - is one of the most significant heritage sites in Australia, and one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. But why is it so significant? What are its ‘treasures’?
The remains of ‘Mungo Woman’ and ‘Mungo Man’ - discovered in the region by Jim Bowler in 1968 and 1974, respectively - are the oldest human remains in Australia, dating to around 40,000 years old. Since 1974, evidence of over 100 more burials has also come to light within the Willandra Lakes system.
Join archaeologist Dr Chris Carter for an intriguing lecture which explores how this incredible landscape was formed and spectacularly evolved over time. Fascinating new discoveries (including skeletons of megafauna and microscopic faunal remains) are also examined, which explain how local inhabitants were able to settle and flourish in the area for millennia.
