Overview
After the birth of the new nation of Portugal, the main tasks at hand were the settlement of the land, the establishment of borders, and their protection against great rival Spain.
Join Dr Jeni Ryde for a fascinating immersion in an exceptional chapter of Portuguese history - its Medieval period.
In particular, this lecture focuses on the regions and outstanding fortified towns that were highly influential on the development of Portugal’s national identity. Known as the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal (or Historical Villages of Portugal), discover the frontline settlements that played an critical role in defending the nation against its enemies, and which remain largely overlooked by tourists today.
