Overview

Born in Leiden in 1606, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn painted many striking portraits and self-portraits throughout his career which remain a critical part of his enduring fame.

After his relocation to Amsterdam in 1631, Rembrandt became one of the city's most successful and in-demand portrait painters. While many of his lively and arresting works focused on individuals - including Amsterdam's wealthy burghers - others featured complex portraits of groups, such as his iconic work 'The Night Watch', which continue to intrigue and inspire.

Rembrandt's many moving self-portraits - in which he presented himself with brutal realism - are an equally important part of his oeuvre. Mirroring the transition of his creative style from detailed to ‘rough’,  Rembrant's self-portraits became more introspective, producing a haunting artistic legacy.

Join Dutch art historian Dr Sophie Oostrewijk for a thrilling look at the people and faces that have populated some of Rembrandt's most moving and celebrated works.
