Overview

Scotland is a country of haunting landscapes and wild beauty, with a complex history and centuries of tradition. Central to its story have always been the clans of Scotland - noble houses bound by their own laws, customs, and judicial systems which played a crucial role in shaping the rich narrative of Scotland’s past.

Through the ages, these clans began to dictate social order and enjoyed political power, often negotiating alliances or conflicts with one another, and even the monarchy itself. Through diplomacy and warfare, they forged the enduring legacy that has left indelible imprints on Scotland's cultural landscape.

In the first of two lectures, join Dr Lauren Mackay on a journey through the history of Scotland, featuring the most powerful and famous clans - MacDonald, Stewart, and Mackenzie, among others - to thread together this intricate tapestry. This is an enthralling journey, from ancient Celtic and Norse origins, through the Middle Ages as well as the remarkable story of Scotland’s legendary “Braveheart”.
