Overview

Created in 1432 by the Van Eyck brothers, The Ghent Altarpiece - or The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb - is acknowledged to be one of the world's great masterpieces.

Housed in St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, the famous piece was begun in the early 1420s by Hubert van Eyck, and completed in 1432 by his more famous brother, Jan van Eyck. Painted in oil, the work depicts the donors, saints, angels, God, Adam, Eve as well as heavenly Jerusalem all in brilliant colours - made even more so after a recent restoration.

Join art historian Dr Sophie Oosterwijk for a lecture which spotlights this iconic painting, and explains its significance by locating the work within its remarkable cultural and historical contexts.
