Overview

Founded by Roman Emperor Trajan as a colony for his veterans in the second century CE, the superbly preserved city of Timgad is an exceptional example of Roman town planning.

As a purpose built Roman city, Timgad was built on a grid, with its streets and avenues running at right angles and perfectly dissecting into blocks. Despite being located in Africa - hundreds of miles away from the Roman capital - it was also equipped with everything needed for a luxurious Roman lifestyle, including a number of bath houses and theatres, and even an impressive library.

Join Dr Eireann Marshall for a fascinating look at a breathtaking example of Roman imperialism on the edge of the Sahara Desert, which remained hidden beneath the sands for nearly a thousand years.
