Overview

Set in the north of Venice in one of the city’s loveliest squares, the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo was Venice’s leading Dominican institution and - like the Frari - was richly endowed by the most prominent citizens as well as confraternities dedicated to Dominican saints.

The church’s impressive nave is the longest in the city, and historically, this is where Venice’s doges’ funerals took place. To this day, it is where leading citizens are commemorated. Together with the Frari, Santi Giovanni e Paolo became Venice’s unofficial pantheon, and at least 25 of Venice’s rulers were entombed here in an array of increasingly grand, monumental tombs, created by the city’s leading sculptors.

Join Dr Susan Steer for a close examination of this magnificent church, including its spectacular coloured glass window – a unique survival in the city famed for its glass - as well as one of Giovanni Bellini’s most significant early masterpieces.
