Overview

In medieval Japan, power was concentrated in the hands of the great military leaders, the shoguns. The greatest of these was Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose imprint on the history of this extraordinary island nation is without equal.

In this two-part course, explore the rise of Shogunate Japan, the long and turbulent rule of the Tokugawa dynasty as well as their extraordinary cultural, artistic and historical legacy.

YOUR EXPERT LECTURER

After graduating in Indian History, Judy Tenzing returned to India to travel, study and ultimately work as a tour guide. Living in the great subcontinent for over a decade and continuing to travel there for over 35 years has afforded Judy both a theoretical and hands-on knowledge of the history and cultures of this extraordinary country. The Mughal Empire has always been one of her passions, along with the British Raj which succeeded it, and her understanding of these periods has led to a clear grasp of Indian in the modern era. Judy takes pride in keeping up her scholarship in this field as new perspectives emerge on eras and figures of the past - such as the new views on Aurangzeb.

 Session info

  • In this lecture we will consider the role of the Emperors and the rise of the great Shoguns, as they established powerful kingdoms in a world of constant threat and betrayal. These shoguns changed the path of Japanese culture, art and religion and laid the foundations for a period of deep isolation yet great stability in Japan.

  • This lecture will focus on the greatest of the Shogun dynasties - the Tokugawas. They emerged from the fires of endless battles for supremacy and under their greatest leader, Tokugawa Ieyasu, secured a period of stability and seclusion during which Japanese tradition and culture thrived for over two centuries.
