Overview

The three largest cities in the Netherlands – The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam – are all situated in Holland (i.e. to the west of the country). Each boasts a wealth of museums, but the three pre-eminent art institutions are undoubtedly the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis in The Hague, and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.

Each of these museums has its own very different history and collections – from international art to Dutch design – that make them a must for visitors to the Netherlands. All three are also housed in historic buildings that have been recently renovated, or are undergoing extensive renovation.

Join art historian Dr Sophie Oosterwijk for a mesmerizing exploration of the fascinating history of each of these buildings, as well as the astounding art collections they contain. A detailed consideration of many standout works is also included, including world famous paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer and more.
